Critical Care

When your pet needs constant, comprehensive care

When your pet is seriously ill, injured, or in unstable condition, your family veterinarian may refer you to BluePearl’s critical care service. Critical care specialists provide intensive care for patients whose conditions are life-threatening, requiring constant monitoring and comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care.

The critical care service is staffed by compassionate, board-certified criticalists who oversee the management of the most seriously ill patients – sometimes for a few hours and sometimes for prolonged periods of time. Often, pets will be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the careful watch of the critical-care team following surgery until your pet is alert, responsive and no longer under the effects of anesthesia.

Regardless of how long your pet is under the critical care team’s care, your family veterinarian will be kept informed about your pet’s condition.

Because critically ill pets need constant monitoring, BluePearl’s ICU is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year — just like an ICU in a human hospital. The unit is designed for your pet’s comfort and safety, and is equipped with sophisticated diagnostic and monitoring technology, including life-support equipment, a heated oxygen therapy cage, and equipment that monitors heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen level, electrolytes and blood-sugar level.

Once stabilized, if your pet requires ongoing care, we may recommend your pet transfer back to the care of your family veterinarian.
